SThe Mentals are a steadily rising indie rock trio from
Austin, Texas. This is their first full length album to be released
independently, which includes 15 songs from previously recorded sessions.
They aren't the most orginal sounding band, but they are trying their
hardest to get their name out there. The sound they produce is a raw
Nirvana quality with psychodelic 70's undertones twisted throughout.
The Mentals are trying to keep the heart of indie music in their recordings
by leaving them with a live and unperfected sound quality, a "first
take sound" as some would call it. It's the way indie rock should
be done. I only saw one outstanding problem with them and it was noticable
in two of their songs, "Without a Care" and "Home",
the repetitiveness was exeeding almost to the point of annoyance. Well,
if you're down with the Seattle grunge sounds of the early nineties,
give these guys a listen to, and if not, it's just another album to
skip over.
